Inaugural lecture: Hugo Parlier - "The unexpected geometry of puzzles"

Diesen Artikel drucken

How do you measure distance between shapes? What is the distance between different Rubik's cubes? How many ways can you cover a chess board with dominos? And how could all of these questions possibly be related to each other?

This broad audience talk will be about illustrating mathematics with puzzles and exploring geometry in unexpected places.

Hugo Parlier studied mathematics at the EPFL in Switzerland and obtained his PhD in 2004. Before joining UL as professor in mathematics in February 2017, Hugo Parlier was at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and previously held positions in Switzerland, the US and Canada. His research lies on the interface of geometry, topology, analysis and combinatorics.

Introduction by Prof. Dr. Paul Heuschling, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication. A reception will take place after the inaugural lecture.
