(C) Alpach Summer School

Masters, PhDs und Post-docs from Luxembourg can apply to take part until 31st March 2016. This year's topic is “Satellite Observations of the Global Water Cycle”.

Do you want to design a space mission? Then take part in the 40th edition of the Alpbach Summer School,  taking place from 12 – 21 July 2016 in Tyrol, Austria. The 2016 theme is ‘Satellite Observations of the Global Water Cycle’. Registrations are now open for science and engineering graduates (Master, PhD and Postdoc level), with the FNR (Fonds National de la Recherche) providing financial support for selected PhDs and Postdocs and the GLAE (Groupement Luxembourg de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace) for engineering graduates.

Focus on ‘Satellite Observations of the Global Water Cycle’

During lectures and working sessions, participants are given the opportunity to expand and strengthen their knowledge of selected space issues.

Students will be challenged to conceive and elaborate innovative satellite space missions aimed at improving the observation of critical elements of the water cycle in order to close gaps in understanding the processes and to advance the representation of the water cycle in Earth system models.

Four student teams will define the scientific objectives of a space mission and will provide a preliminary end-to-end design of spacecraft, scientific instruments as well as mission and science operations that will meet their stated objectives.

The Summer School fosters the practical application of knowledge derived from lectures, develops organisational and team-work skills and encourages creativity.

How to register

The Summer School Alpbach 2016 is open to 60 selected young science and/or engineering graduates (Master, PhD and Postdoc level) from among the member and cooperating states of the European Space Agency (ESA). The working language of the Summer School will be English.
